80G Tax Benefits on Donations in India: A Simple Guide

Giving to a good cause can also reduce what you owe in tax. Under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act, donations to registered charitable organisations are eligible for a deduction — meaning a part of what you give comes back to you at tax time. Here is how it works, in simple terms.
What is Section 80G?
80G is a provision that lets you deduct eligible donations from your taxable income. When you donate to an NGO that holds a valid 80G registration, you can claim that donation as a deduction and lower your tax liability for the year.
How much can you deduct?
It depends on the organisation and the type of donation. Many donations qualify for a 50% deduction of the amount given; some government funds qualify for 100%. Certain categories are also subject to a cap linked to your income. Cash donations above ₹2,000 do not qualify — so give digitally to stay eligible.
What you need to claim it
- A stamped receipt from the NGO showing its name, address, PAN and 80G registration number
- The donation made via a traceable method (UPI, card, netbanking, cheque)
- Form 10BE, the certificate of donation the NGO issues for the financial year
- Your own PAN, to be quoted when you file your return
Keep these safe — you will reference them when filing your income tax return.
